Bachstitz Gallery

est. 1921

Biography

Kurt Backstitz [1882-1949] opened his gallery in Berlin c. 1921, and shortly afterward branches in the Hague and New York. Beginning in 1931 Backstitz handled the sale of some of the collection of Viennese collector Stefan von Auspitz to von Beuningen. Bachstitz, a Jew, fled Germany for Holland during the Nazi regime and was able to obtain a visa to Switzerland in 1942 with the intervention of his brother in law, Walter Andreas Hofer (Hermann Goering's dealer). Some records of the Bachstitz galleries are held by the RKD library in The Hague and the Watson Library of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
