Married first in 1920 to Maria Matthiesen (1896-1936), he changed his name to Franz Zatzenstein-Matthiesen and later went by Francis M. Zatzenstein or Francis Matthiesen. Zatzenstein left Germany in 1933 and went eventually to London, where by 1936 he had established a new Matthiesen Gallery. The Berlin gallery, under the direction of long-time colleague Heinz Mansfeld, was forced to close in 1939.

A collection of old master drawings from Matthiesen/Zatzenstein's estate were sold at Sotheby's London, 21 October 1963.

Formed in 2009, the Archive Team (not to be confused with the archive.org Archive-It Team) is a rogue archivist collective dedicated to saving copies of rapidly dying or deleted websites for the sake of history and digital heritage. The group is 100% composed of volunteers and interested parties, and has expanded into a large amount of related projects for saving online and digital history.
