Peter Dell the Elder

German, c. 1490 - 1552

Dell I, Peter

Biography

Peter Dell the Elder was the leading sculptor living in Würzburg where he had a considerable reputation as a tomb sculptor. He was a pupil of Tilman Riemenschneider of Würzburg (c. 1460-1531) between 1505 and 1510. In addition to producing very fine wooden reliefs of religious subjects, Dell was a talented portrait sculptor of small reliefs, which are the reason for attributing one medal to him (1957.14.1308).
